Aug 31, 2009
Encouraged by a demure, yet exclusive exterior, sophisticated technical elements and an extreme aesthetic of the Sarpaneva Korona K3 Black Moon watch, the honorable jury of the famous Red Dot design competition has bestowed this model with the 2009 Communication Prize.

This timepiece has been created by the Finnish watch manufacturer Stepan Sarpaneva. Inspired by the bleak Finnish winter, the model in question stands out due to its moon phase indicator, which renders the idea of melancholy and contemplation. A special dial, featuring no excessive details, enables the wear to see the entire moon phase cycle, embracing the new moon elusive period.

Sculptured in stainless steel, the Sarpaneva Korona K3 Black Moon timepiece case measures 44mm and reveals a black DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) treatment. The model is animated by an automatic Soprod A10 movement, altered by Sarpaneva for the moon phase complication.

Rendered in stainless steel, the central winding rotor has a white gold mass for extra weight. Its face exposes a hand-made engraving, which successfully duplicates the expression presented in the oxidized silver moon discs.

The watch-making house Sarpaneva has launched the Korona K3 Black Moon watch as a limited series of 20 items only. The timekeepers are proposed in hardwood cases.

This model’s another hallmark, worthy of noting, is a hand-bound book, which accompanies every Black Moon timepiece from those twenty issued. The book unveils the tale of the she-demon, named Lilith, who was drawing her power from the new moon to prey upon men.

Marlon Brando's Vacheron Constantin Watch Shows Up At Auction

Aug 27, 2009
The celebrities of the past used to present each other with engraved luxury watches as a sign of their affection and respect. Later on, the most attractive models were closely watched if they appeared at auction.

This tradition will be probably brought back by Antiquorum’s latest “Important Collectors’ Wristwatches” auction, where a 1954 Vacheron Constantin Ref. 4877 watch, gifted by Zsa Zsa Gabor to Marlon Brando will show up.

Sculptured in 18k gold, this model case incorporates a hand-wound movement. Mr Brando was given this timepiece as a present on the theatrical release of “On The Waterfront,” a movie bestowed with many prizes, with the best actor for Marlon Brando and the best picture among them. This award was an eloquent recognition of Brando’s acting talent.

The watch features an engraving, represented by the short message to Brando from Gabor and the date. Such timepieces are high regarded objects both for Vacheron Constantin collectors and those enthusiasts attracted to Hollywood items from a period in American Cinema, which seems to be more romantic and simple.

Longines has been known for its long-term involvement in equestrian sports, gymnastics, Alpine skiing, tennis, short-track and archery - the sports distinguished by gracefulness, exactitude and traditions.

Now the brand has entered the sport, which requires perfect physical shape, an acute tactical awareness and undoubtedly high precision. Thus, the badminton matches Longines core values – exactitude, traditions and gracefulness, which have been affirmed for over 175 years.

The history of badminton dates back to 1873, when some English officers got together in the castle, located in the village of Badminton (UK). Since their meeting took place shortly after they had come back from India, they were discussing an Indian game dubbed “poona”, which was played with a racket and a low-weight ball. With no ball at their disposal, the officers used a cork stuck with feathers instead. Thus, there appeared a new game, called badminton!

Nowadays, lots of people dedicate their spare time to playing this game, which is regarded both as great fun and a demanding Olympic sport.

A. Lange & Sohne Offers Its Rose Gold Version Of Lange 31

Aug 26, 2009
The horological company A. Lange & Sohne, of Glashutte, based in Germany, has just introduced a novel rose gold interpretation of the famous Lange 31. The latter, offered in a platinum case, made its original appearance two years ago. Afterwards, a major designer Martin Schetter in collaboration with his design team got down to developing a new version of the model.

They invested more than two years of painstaking effort in creating a novel interpretation. Such lengthy period of work is easily explained by the brand’s attention paid to every little detail in terms of quality and design. The results are always worth waiting for, since A. Lange & Sohne is notable for its spectacular watches all over the world.

The Lange 31 watch is the first mechanical timepiece in the world, able to offer a 31-day power reserve, as well as a constant-force escapement, which provides the going train with constant torque delivery.

The huge amount of energy, necessary for the timepiece to function properly, is delivered to the movement by means of a winding key and stored then in a twin mainspring barrel. Thus, the balance gets an equal amount of energy every ten second, irrespectively of the state of wind of the springs.

The movement, boasting such a respectable power reserve, measures 37.3 mm in diameter and is 9.6 mm thick. The case of the Lange 31 model is oversized. Actually, this is the largest watch ever proposed by A. Lange & Sohne.

The brand’s timepiece cases are usually from 38 to 42mm wide and from 9 to 14mm thick. The case of the model in question features the dimensions of 45.9 mm x15.9 mm, with the width and thickness indicated respectively.

Bovet Trilogy Watch Recreates Da Vinci's Mona Lisa

Aug 20, 2009
It is absolutely natural for the Bovet brand to create exclusive timepieces, whose aesthetic appeal lies in a clever blend of artistic freedom and technical constraints. To a great extent it has been achieved due to the efforts of the watchmaking company’s owner, Pascal Raffy.

To take part in the Only Watch 2009, an annual charity auction of exclusive watches, held to obtain funds for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the Bovet watchmaking house has manufactured a one-of-a-kind timepiece, which features in miniature the most renowned painting in the world – Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

The Bovet Trilogy watch, intended for Only Watch 2009, adapts its title from the capabilities of its unique 42mm case, sculptured in 18K rose gold. The watch exposes the iconic pocket timepiece-styled case bow, which is regarded as a virtual signature of the Bovet brand. Thanks to the case unrivalled design, created and patented by the company, this model can be used as a wristwatch, a pocket watch or a table clock.

The flanks, the lugs and the curved bow of the case feature a hand-carved Fleurisanne engraving, which creates a perfect frame for the exceptional dial and demonstrates the goldsmiths’ craftsmanship. The winding crown as well as the outer hinge of the bow reveal matchless sapphire cabochons.

It took a Bovet enamel painter more than a month of meticulous work to recreate the miniature reproduction of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, which is extremely difficult to copy down to the last detail, including the mysterious smile of La Gioconda.

The specialist of miniature enamel carried out this demanding task, working under a microscope. The paints, from the carefully chose pallete, were applied with minuscule brushes. The latter were made of the finest marten hair’s tiny segments.

The crowning achievement of this masterpiece is its crystalline clarity, standing out against an appealing opalescent background of black mother of pearl.

The Bovet Trilogy "Mona Lisa" watch is available in a gorgeous presentation box, made of burled hardwood.

The watch is accompanied by an alligator leather strap finished with an engraved rose gold folding clasp. To turn the Bovet Trilogy model into a pocket watch, it is also supplied with a rose gold chain and bow attachment.

The 2009 Only Watch auction will be held in Monaco on September 24th. Bovet's Trilogy timepiece, as well as a spectrum of exclusive watches to be presented by the other famous watch-making houses, will be put up for auction without a reserve price. All proceeds raised from the auction will be donated to assist worldwide research efforts dedicated to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Serpenti Watch Line from Bulgari

Aug 19, 2009
The starting point in terms of design for both watches and jewelry, manufactured by the Bulgari brand, was a serpentine scale motif. Thus, the horological company decided to use this time-tested technique again.

Bulgari is proud to present its new line of “scaled” pieces, the Serpenti collection, which comprises numerous watch interpretations. The watch comes with a bangle, which “winds” around a lady’s wrist. The design of the timepiece is a perfect mixture of many styles: each of them created by means of employing a different material or an embellishment.

The Serpenti watches demonstrate diamonds, pink coral, jade, as well as onyx. The bracelet is manufactured from precious metals, with 18k white and rose gold on the list.

The end of the bracelet exposes the watch part, which is represented in the form of a snake’s head. The face resembles an arrow head in its shape, while diamond-paved hour markers coordinate well with the stubby dauphine hands.

The Serpenti line is regarded as a jewelry collection rather than that of timepieces. It is distinguished by a relatively complex style of design that hearkens back to 1980s.

At the same time the Bulgari watch is extremely graceful in its design, suggestive of the times when Bulgari was making its first steps in the watchmaking industry.
