Bovet Tourbillon Ottanta by Pininfarina Watch - Four Timepieces in One!

Jun 25, 2010
Bovet is pleased to present its new limited-edition Haute Horlogerie timepiece that celebrates the 80th anniversary of the prestigious Italian design brand Pininfarina. The brand, established in 1930 and headquartered in Turin, is famous as the producer of classic and modern cars, with the Alfa Romeo Spider, Cadillac Allante, Maserati GranTurismo, Volvo P70 and a wide range of Ferraris on the list.

Pascal Raffy, in the head of Bovet, and his team of watchmakers in Fleurier, Switzerland, joined efforts with Paolo Pininfarina to create the new Bovet Tourbillon Ottanta by Pininfarina watch, reflecting the Italian company’s distinctive design details as well as those of the watchmaking brand. The exclusive timepiece is limited to just 80 pieces.

The heart of the new Bovet watch is a sophisticated automatic movement with a tourbillon - Calibre 16BA01. The 514-component movement incorporates an off-center, bidirectional microrotor crafted from a single block of platinum. The tourbillon is unique on its own - while a usual tourbillon completes its revolution in 60 seconds, the Bovet tourbillon performs the same in 80 seconds. This remarkable technological feat pays tribute to the 80th anniversary of Pininfarina.

To come up with the unique tourbillon, the brand’s engineers used an intersection in the going train to divide it into two separate reduction trains after the third wheel, one delivering energy to the seconds crown and the other to the tourbillon cage.

The latter demonstrates a hand traversing points that stand for eight decades in the history of the Italian company instead of counting off the seconds per minute. At 3 o’clock, there is a lacquered crown, concentric with the tourbillon cage, and responsible for indicating the seconds.

The Bovet Tourbillon Ottanta watch also boasts an innovative case construction. The 46-mm case of the watch is sculptured from brushed titanium and steel and provided with black DLC coating. The case construction is created in Bovet’s Amadeo style, implying you can rotate the case to see either the “dial side” or “movement side” in the front.

It should be mentioned that the case is available in another version - with a bezel and case-back crafted in white or rose gold.

The dial features hours and minutes hands traditionally placed in the center, while the power reserve indicator is found at 9 o’clock. You will notice a big date display, representing two concentric disks, at 6 o’clock.

The brand’s watchmakers developed a system for instantaneous date changing specially for this new timepiece.

As for the movement side, it allows to see the microrotor. You will also see a sub-dial at 12 o’clock with a single hand indicating hours, half-hours and quarter hours. It has been inspired by the style of some of the first pocket watches. The moving tourbillon cage may be admired from both sides of the case.

Pininfarina’s design elements are reflected by the monochromatic gray/anthracite color scheme. The eight engraved phrases, each standing for one decade, on the middle section of the case, reflect the brand’s design philosophies. The rubber strap boasts the “alcantara-style” velour lining inside to make you think of the luxurious feel of a Ferrari’s interior leather.

True watch aficionados will surely appreciate clous de Paris patterns embellishing the bridges of the tourbillon cage, not to mention sandblasted, chamfered and hand-polished surfaces and circular graining on other parts of the movement.

The blue PVD screws, power reserve hand, and the balance reflect the color of the Pininfarina logo.

One more original detail - the rim of the balance wheel is shaped like an “8” inside an “0” ring hinting at Pininfarina’s anniversary, the same as the 80-hour power reserve provided by the two barrels.

One more great advantage of the watch’s Amadeo case is that in no time you can transform the wristwatch into a pocket-watch or even a miniature table clock. All you have to do is to press the two pieces on either side of the bow found above the winding crown, this way releasing the upper section of the strap. Then, you have to use a minute-repeater-like slide for releasing the lower section.

The watch is available with a titanium chain to be attached to the upper part of the case to wear it as a pocket-watch. The pivoting lower bezel at 6 o’clock represents a stable support when the watch is used as a clock. You do not need any tools for the watch’s transformations. You can also easily replace the straps.

The new Bovet Tourbillon Ottanta by Pininfarina watch is expected to be available at an astounding price of about 300,000 US dollars, reflecting its exclusively sophisticated nature.
