The Sinn 857 UTC watch, created for men, has experienced its world premiere at Baselworld 2009. The model is powered by an automatic movement, which allows the watch face to display a dual time-zone. The most notable detail though, is the watch’s tegimented steel case and bracelet.
The Sinn 857 UTC timepieces employ Tegimented cases, manufactured by Sinn's case making company, located in Glashutte, Germany.
Tegimented cases feature a hardness rating of 1,200 Vickers. For comparison, traditional stainless steel cases expose 200-240 Vickers. The Tegiment layer of the case hardens the steel and reliably protects the case surface from scratching as well as the influence of other abrasions.
In spite of the fact that the Tegimented steel is solid by itself the Sinn Company prefers to take this material to the new frontiers: the hardened steel is treated with black PVD-coating. Thus, the case acquires a darker exterior as well as an extra protection against scratches and abrasions.
The case reveals a copper sulphate capsule. It reacts with the moisture, diffusing and absorbing the humidity in the timepiece. In a while, as the humidity is absorbed, this capsule, which can be seen through an aperture in the left lug, turns deep blue. The usage of this technology ends up in a two-fold result: the movement is provided with a robust environment and the crystal is protected from fogging, which occurs when a watch is taken from hot environment to cold one.
The watch in question boasts a supremely high anti-magnetic rating of 80,000 A/m.
Another accomplishment of the Sinn company is the manufacture of a bezel affixed by the screws. This very design ensures great breakage-resistance of the bezel. The inlaid aluminum ring, which exposes numerals and markers, is anodized black to provide accurate time-reading. The triangle reference marker, placed at 12 o’clock, is coated with a special luminous compound to assure visibility in any light conditions.
The matte black dial demonstrates Arabic numerals and offset date display, nestled at 4 o’clock. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal, featuring anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Wearing this watch will not cause any allergic problems, since its case-back contains no nickel.
The timepiece, reviewed by Watches.InfoNIAC.com, provides a second time-zone, revealing a skeleton yellow-tipped hour hand. The second time-zone adjustment is accomplished through the crown’s second position. A 24-hour indication is used here to differentiate AM and PM.
The Sinn watch case features the dimensions of 43 mm x 12.2 mm. The Sinn 857 UTC watch offers 200-meter water-resistance.
It is mounted on a Tegimented PVD steel bracelet with hex screws and solid end links.
