Meet Sophisticated Rotonde de Cartier Astrotourbillon Watch

May 12, 2010
The famous French jeweler and watchmaker Cartier is proud to present it fascinating Rotonde de Cartier Astrotourbillon watch. The chief attribute of this new model is its 9451 MC movement produced entirely in the manufacture’s workshops.

It took the brand’s masters five years to develop this highly advanced movement. It is equipped with the tourbillon carriage, comprising various members of the escapement and sprung balance.

This mechanism has borrowed some of its features from the classic tourbillon. Its carriage, for example, is driven by the third wheel of the gear train. Similar to its conventional counterpart, the new tourbillon is equipped with the escapement wheel pinion. It spins around a fixed seconds-wheel, the fourth wheel of the gear train, in order to drive the escapement.

At the same time, the tourbillion offers certain technical upgrades over its predecessor. The company’s creative minds have placed the carriage at the center of the movement, providing it with a special rotational axis. The introduction of this revolutionary structure naturally required a complete change in the gear-train design.

The visual excitement of this Astrotourbillon movement is ensured by another innovation: the balance staff and escapement-wheel staff are not located on the same rotational axis as the carriage. These elements are placed on one side of the carriage, in linear alignment with its rotational axis. Finally, the tourbillon carriage is not integrated into the movement, yet positioned “above” it, between two dials.

Paved with 23 jewels, the hand-wound calibre 9451 MC Astrotourbillon movement features the dimensions of 38 mm x 9.01 mm, diameter and thickness indicated respectively. It is composed of 187 individual parts. The movement runs at the rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour and boasts a 48-hour power reserve.

The heart of this marvelous Rotonde de Cartier Astrotourbillon watch is beating inside a 47 mm case crafted from 18 carat white or pink gold. The case exposes a circular-grained crown manufactured from the same material. It is embellished with a sapphire cabochon. Both front and back sides of the watch are fitted with sapphire crystals. The new Cartier watch is submersible to 30 meters.

The final touch is provided by a black or brown alligator leather strap. It terminates in a double adjustable folding clasp sculptured in 18 carat white or pink gold.
