Cartier Rotonde Astroregulateur Watch - Counteracting Effects of Gravity

Dec 29, 2010
Cartier has created a stir by the release of a new Rotonde Astroregulateur watch. An identifying attribute of the model is a self-winding mechanical Calibre 9800 MC movement, developed and manufactured from A to Z in the brandís workshops.

The extraordinary mechanism was born as a result of painstaking effort invested by highly-qualified specialists within a period of five years. A true technical feat, the individually numbered movement is 10.1 mm thick and boasts a diameter of 32.5 mm.

It comprises 281 individual parts. Embellished with 43 jewels, the mechanism runs at the rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers an 80-hour power reserve.

The movement, housed in the new Cartier watch, required 60 hours of hand finishing. It also incorporates a circular-grained main plate. Its bridges, meanwhile, are beveled, drawn and adorned with a Cotes-de-Geneve pattern.

The zest of the caliber 9800 MC is an escapement, fitted on the oscillating weight in order to eliminate the effects of gravity in vertical positions. The point is, that during the day the wearerís wrist moves in many directions and at various speeds. Thus, the escapement is subject to a variety of accelerations as the rotor spins.

According to Cartier, the movements of the userís wrist apply forces of various strengths on the entry lip of the escapement. The forces mentioned need to be corrected in order to maintain the escapement at a constant speed, which is a vital condition for perfect timekeeping.

The caliber described serves to animate the functions of hours, minutes and seconds, which are immediate and clear on a galvanic guilloched dial of the new Rotonde Astroregulateur watch. Slate-gray in color, the face of the timepiece is equipped with transferred Roman numerals and hour-markers.

It also features two overlapped displays. The upper one whispers the time through hours and minutes, indicated by sword-shaped blued steel hands. The lower counter takes care of seconds, positioned on the rotor in order to maintain the centre of gravity in a single position.

The perfectly balanced dial is gently embraced by a 50 mm case, crafted from niobium-titanium alloy. The case is endowed with a charismatic circular-grained crown. Rendered in titanium or 18 carat white gold, the crown is skillfully paved with sapphire cabochon.

The case is assembled with top and bottom sapphire crystals. It is capable of withstanding water pressures down to 30 meters.

To be issued in limited edition of just 50 pieces, the new Cartier watch is mounted on a black alligator leather strap. It terminates in a double adjustable folding clasp, crafted from 18 carat gold.
