Oris Big Crown X1 Calculator Watch - Inspired by Bell X-1 Plane

By launching its new Big Crown X1 Calculator watch, the horological company Oris pays tribute to the historical aircraft. The model draws its inspiration from the Bell X-1 plane, which was the first to break the sound barrier.

The new Oris watch takes the audience back to the period when the aircrafts were made, using slide rules. It sports a rotating bezel, which serves to adjust the slide rule. Beyond that, this element is utilized for the calculation of the fuel consumption for a given flight time.

The bezel is incorporated into the structure of a PVD-treated gunmetal grey stainless steel case. It measures 46 mm in diameter. The case is equipped with a powerful winding crown, revealed at 3 o’clock.

It is supported by two chronograph push-pieces, located at 2 and 4 o’clock. These buttons are marked with X and 1. The model is 30-meter water-resistant.

The body of the new Big Crown X1 Calculator watch is fitted with a front sapphire crystal, glare-proofed on both sides. For its back part, the specialists within the manufacture used a mineral glass. The case-back also exposes a m/ft conversion table, intended for international use.

The top sapphire glass serves to protect an attractive function-packed dial, performed in metallized black/grey. The display is completed with eye-catching Arabic numerals, featured at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. Clothed in white, the numbers alternate with stick-shaped hour-markers, dressed in the same color.

The dial ensures central hours and minutes, indicated by means of broad obvious hands, also white. They are kept company by a slim seconds hand. Both hour-markers and hands are treated with Superluminova compound, which provides a good level of darkness visibility. The minute track is also highlighted with Superluminova.

Additionally, the watch face comprises a 12-hour, 30-minute and small seconds counters, placed at 6, 12 and 9 o’clock respectively. The date indication appears in the rectangular aperture, positioned at 9 o’clock. It comfortably sits over the small seconds counter. The date information, meanwhile, is shown in a neat exhibition window at 4.30. The functions mentioned are driven by a self-winding ETA Valjoux 7750 movement.

A perfect fusion of functionality, precision and aesthetic sophistication, the new Oris watch is accompanied by a black calfskin leather strap, which boasts white stitching.
