New Sony Ericsson MBW-200 Bluetooth Watch for Bold Ladies

Sep 26, 2008
Sony Ericsson has introduced a new gadget watch designed specially for ladies - the MBW-200, based on the brand's earlier-developed MBW-150 Bluetooth watches for men.

The stylish MBW-200, developed in close collaboration with Fossil, has been created in three distinct variations - Sparkling Allure, Contemporary Elegance and Evening Classic.

All the three versions of the Sony Ericsson MBW-200 Bluetooth watch are not only aesthetically attractive, but also extremely user-friendly, developed to make the life of a modern lady more convenient.

The timepiece has a 30-meter water-resistant stainless steel case construction with scratch-resistant mineral crystal glass with an anti-glare coating to provide optimum readability.

The MBW-200 is equipped with a small monochrome OLED display. Being connected to the cell phone via Bluetooth, the MBW-200 displays the incoming caller ID and vibrates when its female owner receives a call on her cell phone, and alerts when she gets a new text message. The lady will also be able to reject or mute the call, using a special button on the watch, or answer the call, using the Bluetooth headset or mobile phone.

The gadget watch also incorporates a row of dedicated music playback keys, so the timepiece may be used as a remote control for a music-centric cell phone.

The Sony Ericsson MBW-200 Bluetooth watch will only work with Sony Ericsson cell phones, though special applications have been developed by third parties to allow the gadget to interface with Windows Mobile and Symbian-powered smartphones. No information on the price range has been provided, but the wristwatches are intended to be available in the Forth Quarter of the year.

Sony Ericsson has invited three famous female tennis players to demonstrate the distinctive nature of every version of the MBW-200.

The Sparkling Allure watch is the choice of 19-year-old Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova, an ideal choice for practical and self-assured ladies. The glamorous, yet sporty watch catches the glance due to its rose gold rim embellished with crystal decor stones, framing the watch's face with matching rose gold hands with white fill. The gadget watch embraces the wrist with a white crocodile leather strap fitted with a rose gold clasp.

The Contemporary Elegance version has been selected to embellish the wrist of 18-year-old Danish 'Princess of Tennis' Caroline Wozniacki. The timepiece is created for busy women who spend a lot of time at work, yet enjoy communicating with their friends. The dazzling watch reveals an elegant white face and goes on a stainless steel band.

The Evening Classic watch has adorned the wrist of 19-year-old Hungarian tennis superstar Agnes Szavay. It is created for all the ladies who need a classic yet stylish timekeeping companion. The timepiece features a discreet black face and goes on a black leather band, a great lady's watch to wear on any occasion.

I've got the Contemporary Elegance watch and use it with a Windows Mobile phone. Software smartwatchM courtesy of smartmadsoft enables 40 or so functions. I get SMS text, e-mails, stopwatch function, countdown timer, RSS feeds, weather, you name it. I can leave my phone on silent and never miss a call with the vibration function. I can also instantly identify the caller just by looking at the watch. I can even sen pre-set SMS messages with the push of a button. It's incredible, plus this solid watch it looks good on the wrist.

Great watch BUT...
... be careful to check compatability for BlueTooth operation as this device may not work with all phones, in particular Sony Ericsson Android models like the Xperia X10i (don't ask me how I know this, it was an "Ouch" moment).
It's also quite large and chunky, very trendy at the moment (August 2010) but many women with smaller wrists might find it a bit too much.
Android issues (may be fixed in future updates) for MBW-200 also aparently for MBW-150 series as well.
Mine is a Sparkling Allure and the quality of build and overall look and feel is very good. Note however the watch only has a seven or so day battery life between charges and as such isn't ideal if it is only to be used as a time piece (which is what one's phone is for anyway).
If it worked with my Sony Ericsson phone the watch would get five stars as some serious girly techie goodness, as it is I can only give it one star and keep my fingers crossed that SE will wake up and properly support these shiny baubles in Android OS phones.
