Marc Newson has created a new watch collection with a mysterious name Solaris. The collection of simple, elegant dress watches has been named after Andrei Tarkovsky’s movie based on the novel by Stanislaw Lem.

According to Marc Newson, the Ikepod Solaris watch renders the idea of duality and being double. The designer was inspired by the idea of creating a symmetrical two-faced wristwatch, with one face visible and the other hidden.

While the Solaris novel by Stanislaw Lem and Andrei Tarkovsky’s movie are devoted to the relationship between reality and dreams, the Solaris watch by Marc Newson features two time zones to keep its owner aware of the time in two different places. The timepiece is equipped with two separate highly accurate quartz movements, completely independent of each other.

While the previously designed Ikepod watches are highly demanded among men because of their scale and weight, the new timepiece is sure to appeal to women as much. The case of the Solaris watch is crafted from stainless steel, yellow or white gold. The designer has also created a ceramic version of the timepiece that is much lighter.

As mesh is a material that is quite difficult to find, the designer’s team developed a strong yet flexible variation of the material to have a watchstrap that would hold the timepiece in place on the wrist.

In fact, the production of metal mesh requires much hand finishing and involves another complex and specialized micro-industry. Mark Newson has cooperated with a German company producing mesh and chains for a number of industries and industrial applications, including the textile industry.

Depending on the variation, the Ikepod Solaris watch will be available at the price of 6 700 Euro, 16 750 Euro, and 24 000 Euro.
