Jul 02, 2008
IWC Schaffhausen has proudly announced that the brand's army of ambassadors has been joined by a new brilliant personality - Zinedine Zidane, one of the best footballers in the world. The Swiss watch-making company has created a timepiece dedicated to the famous footballer - the Ingenieur Automatic Edition Zinedine Zidane. The Ingenieur watch will be produced in a limited edition of 1,000 pieces.

Having finished his career of an active footballer two years ago, Zinedine Zidane is a true sporting legend, winning the hearts of his avid fans. Zinedine Zidane has become World Footballer of the Year three times, and won the prestigious title of 1999 World Sportsman of the Year. Having played for Juventus Turin and Real Madrid, the athlete won a remarkable number of national and international titles. His career was highlighted by a victory in the World Cup. In 1998, Zidane became the captain of 'Equipe Tricolore', having won the title in his own country and having achieved victory in the European Cup in the Netherlands two years afterwards.

IWC Schaffhausen and Zinedine Zidane share deep passion for precision, perfection, technical competence, as well as social responsibility in the respective areas. While IWC is closely involved in the 'Laureus Sport for Good Foundation' and in important environment-protecting projects, the prominent footballer supports the fight against poverty acting as an ambassador for the UNDP, the United Nations' development program.

The IWC Ingenieur Automatic is the best timepiece of the brand to match personal and professional characteristics of the football star. Just as Zinedine Zidane is world-famous for having played brilliant football, the IWC Ingenieur is distinguished by its clear, functional design.

The both names are closely associated with supreme technical performance. The IWC watch is equipped with the IWC-in-house 80111-calibre movement, highly appreciated for its automatic, highly efficient Pellaton winding mechanism. Moreover, the shock-absorbing system guarantees high durability, further improved by a sturdy case boasting 120-meter water resistance. The movement provides the date display at 3 o'clock, a central seconds hand with stop function and a 44-hour power-reserve.

The aesthetics of the IWC Ingenieur Automatic watch are created to make one think of the legendary footballer. The particular attention has been paid to the color coding. The French national colors are featured on the watch's dial echoed by the blue crocodile leather strap embellished with red decorative stitching - just the right choice for a footballer who played for France 108 times during a 12-year period.

The glittering blue dial of the IWC watch is completed with red-and-white minute graduations. The Arabic numeral '10' created in red catches attention, standing out against the eleven appliqued, lustrous hour indices. Among footballers number '10' is believed to have some magic power. '10' was Zidane's number in the French national side.

The stainless steel case of the Ingenieur Automatic Edition Zinedine Zidane measures 44 mm in diameter. The case construction has incorporated a screw-in crown and antireflective sapphire crystal. The case back of the watch holds a big surprise for fans of the excellent footballer. It reveals the engraved portrait and autograph of the athlete, circled by the inscription 'Zinedine Zidane - World Champion 1998' and the name of the collection- ' Ingenieur '. The case back of the IWC watch also features the serial number of the piece.

The Ingenieur Automatic Edition Zinedine Zidane watch was unveiled by Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen and the world-famous footballer himself, at a special event held on 16 June at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. The exclusive launch event was joined the footballer's team-mates from the 1998 French national team, together with basketball star Tony Parker and his wife and famous actress Eva Longoria, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and actor Christophe Lambert.
