Zenith Academy Open Repetition Minutes Watch

Nov 11, 2008
The Minute Repeater complication is one of the most sophisticated expressions of the Art of Watchmaking. First minute repeaters appeared more than 300 years ago and were incorporated by clocks and pocket watches. The initial minute repeaters allowed time-reading at night, when people used no electric lights but only candles.

Today, only most experienced watchmaking companies can boasts minute repeater watches in their collections, and Zenith is one of the very few of them.

Zenith has managed to unite the Minute Repeater mechanism with the brand's legendary EI Primero Chronograph. The extremely complicated Zenith watch accommodates the new 4043 caliber. The mechanism comprises 461 elements and 45 rubies. The mechanism, beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, gives an advantage of a 50-hour power-reserve.

To unite the two complications, Zenith watchmakers have developed and patented a system that enabled the chiming mechanism to encircle the axes of the chronograph. The striking mechanism rack is elaborated in one super-complicated piece with teeth featuring concentric levers for the hours and minutes.

The Zenith Academy Open Repetition Minutes watch chimes low for the hours, high for minutes, and double tone for the quarter hours. The dial of the Zenith watch reveals a range of transparent openings that allow to drop a look at a majestic ballet of hammers. In case you are eager to better see the operating mechanism, there is one more version of the timepiece featuring an entirely sapphire dial.

The dial is completed with 18K gold hand-mounted applied indexes and numerals and faceted hands. The dial showcases hours and minutes in the center, and small seconds hand at 9 o'clock. The chronograph function is presented through the central seconds hand, 30-minute counter found at 3 o'clock, and 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock.

The 45mm case of the Zenith watch is crafted from solid gold. The first classic version of the timepiece demonstrates a rose gold case with a hand-guilloche silver dial. The second contemporary version demonstrates a white gold case with a transparent dial. The case construction incorporates a transparent sapphire glass case-back.

The Zenith Academy Open Repetition Minutes watch is secured to the wrist on a black crocodile leather strap lined with silky Alzavel calfskin and equipped with an 18K gold triple folding buckle.

The watch is 30-meter water-resistant.
