George Clooney Joins Efforts with Omega

Aug 09, 2007
George Clooney has recently joined the star-family of Omega watch ambassadors. The Oscar-winning actor and movie director has long been interested in timekeeping creations of the brand.

Mr. Clooney initially found out about the Omega Company in his childhood as he heard the news about the Omega watch that passed the strictest NASA tests and was selected to accompany the first man on the Moon. He was one of the youngster who belonged to the generation of Americans growing up in space-age.

In one of his recent interviews, when asked about his decision to sign as an Omega ambassador, George Clooney was glad to share his memories about those times: 'I remember me and my friends growing up in the 1960s - 1970s, the time when everyone's attention was captured by the space race. We used to get different watches and draw Omega logos on them', said the actor.

In fact, George Clooney received his first Omega watch in 1969, the important year in the space-exploration history when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon accompanied by the Omega Speedmaster Professional watch.

It was Clooney's uncle who presented the American actor with his first own Omega. The first Clooney's Omega watch he has owned for about 40 years is still kept by his father. George Clooney has recently taken advantage of his ambassador-status and had the strap of his vintage Omega watch changed.

The celebrated actor had an exclusive chance to try himself at watch-making during an Omega-organized event held at the Nicolas G. Hayek Center building located in Ginza shopping district in Tokyo on 30 July 2007. The Hollywood superstar was invited to visit the Omega boutique in Hayek Center. Mr. Clooney put on a special white coat and eyeglass of a master watch-maker and, under the guidance of a Japanese Omega watch specialist, tried to assemble the movement developed to power the new Omega Railmaster XXL watch.

After this amazing experience George Clooney, accompanied by Omega president Stephen Urquhart, was invited to Tokyo's Conrad Hotel where he met media representatives and VIPs. Rising Japanese star Rinko Kishuki, who starred in the hit movie Babel, introduced the actor to the guests. Mr. Urquhart told the audience he was delighted to have George Clooney as an official member of the Omega family. Now the most charming American actor is on the list of other Omega watch ambassadors, with Nicole Kidman, Michael Schumacher, Cindy Crawford, and Gene Cernan, among many others.

Well, I don't really think George Clooney has any experience in watchmaking. You have to study and then practice for a long time to be able to assemble a watch mechanism. Most probably Omega came up with the idea to attract more attention to its products.Still I think they managed to deliver the message - George Clooney is the right person to become an ambassador of this prestigious brand.

George Clooney is a very sexy man.It turns out he is not just a great actor but a successful watch maker too.But is he a man of unique talent to be so great in everything he's doing? Or this is just a great Omega advertising campaign?
