Diver's Watch Bearing a Piece of Cousteau's Legendary Vessel

Jul 27, 2007

The IWC Aquatimer Chronograph 'Cousteau Divers' Special Edition watch appeared out of the company's desire to support the activity of The Cousteau Society.

The proceeds from the watches' sales were partially donated to the non-profit organization devoted to the conservation of marine life and preservation of tropical coral reefs. The IWC watch entered the limited edition of 2,500 pieces.

The peculiarity of the IWC watch for divers is that it incorporates a sliver of wood from the interior of the Calypso, the world-famous research vessel of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. The Commander's vessel represented a converted minesweeper.

The tiny sliver features the Calypso silhouette visible through the sapphire glass on the steel case back of every IWC watch. This way the Aquatimer Chronograph 'Cousteau Divers' Special Edition pays tribute to the legendary 'man of the seas', who greatly contributed to the research of marine depths while sailing his famous ship.

On the case back of the IWC watch you will also notice 'Tribute to Calypso' engraving as well as the limited-edition serial number.

The special edition of the IWC Aquatimer Chronograph is housed in the stainless steel case measuring 44 mm in diameter. The dial of the IWC watch is blue, having inherited this feature from the first Aquatimer 'Cousteau Divers' series. The timepiece is secured to the wrist with a blue rubber strap.

The IWC Aquatimer Chronograph 'Cousteau Divers' Special Edition watch has been developed in the best traditions of the reliable IWC watches for divers. As diving is always associated with limited time, the time divers spend under water is precious and must be measured with utmost precision.

The Aquatimer Chronograph's speciality is to guarantee perfect timing under water. In the heart of the IWC watch for divers there beats an automatic chronograph movement. It boasts 120-meter water-resistance. This Special Edition watch incorporated the advantages of the IWC Aquatimer family, providing the supplementary uses of a chronograph developed according to the particular conditions a diver uses his watch.

The IWC Aquatimer Chronograph 'Cousteau Divers' offers the extremely useful for divers, supplementary function of a rotating inner bezel that is used for setting and reading the dive time. It is possible to rotate the bezel only in a single direction for safety reasons. The chronograph reset button placed at 4 o'clock provides a dual function. It may be used as a crown to adjust the unidirectional rotating bezel, as well as a reset button for the chronograph function.

The IWC watch bearing a tiny piece of the legendary Calypso represents a coveted rarity among watch collectors and connoisseurs. This way the IWC watch-makers made the Calypso accompany the owners of the diver's watch during sea and underwater adventures.

The IWC company was one of the pioneers in the field of diver's watches. Diving was popularized as a sport in the 1960s, due to Cousteau efforts in particular. The first IWC watch for divers was released under the Aquatimer name.

The IWC Aquatimer initiated a new tradition in developing of specialized watches for underwater use. IWC produced a series of extremely water-resistant timepieces, matching the ever-increasing loads. Today among a variety of IWC watches for divers you will discover timepieces characterized by supreme reliability, accuracy and distinctive design.
