Cyrus Klepcys Watches - Inspired by City of Babylon

Feb 14, 2011
Cyrus delights the connoisseurs of exclusive watchmaking with its new Klepcys collection. The amazing watches, included into the line, pay tribute to Babylon - a city-state of ancient Mesopotamia.

It was situated on the Euphrates River about 50 miles to the south of the modern Baghdad, just to the north of what is now the modern Iraqi town of al-Hillah.

In 539 BC, the Neo-Babylonian Empire fell to Cyrus the Great, king of Persia, with an unprecedented military engagement known as the Battle of Opis. Cyrus didn’t destroy an enchanting city. Many people in Babylon welcomed the Persians as liberators and the Persian king ensured that local religious customs were observed.

The city of Babylon was known for the Hanging Gardens, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was also famous for its imposing seven-storied Tower of Babel. With its height equal to 91 meters, it was believed to “lead to the heavens”.

The extraordinary nature of this historical city is perfectly mirrored in the new Klepcys collection. The new Cyrus watch, reference Ref 539.002.A, is offered in a limited edition of just 88 pieces. It employs a black DLC-coated titanium case. Powerful and inaccessible, it evokes the walls of Babylon, which greatly impressed Cyrus’ men in the distance.

Measuring 48 mm in diameter, the case boasts 18K white gold horns with a high quality finish. It also exposes two charismatic winding crowns, which face each other. Another point of attention is represented by visible screws, which resemble the brand’s three-part logo and symbolize the “locks” of the walls of Babylon.

The peerless artisans within the manufacture have also endowed the model with a unique back part. It sports an identical copy of a more than 2,500-year-old coin, made during the reign of Cyrus. Imprinted around the coin is a special message, directed to the watch owner. It reads, “Babylon is a city-state with a unique architecture and gathering all the technical and intellectual Know-How of its time”. The original, meanwhile, is kept by the company’s founders in Switzerland.

The interior life of the new Klepcys watch is represented by an automatic CYR598 movement. Adorned with 37 rubies, it comprises 456 individual parts. The mechanism operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 40-hour power reserve.

The movement in question serves to animate the functions, which can be observed on the unconventional dial, busy to the point of being stimulating. It displays hours, minutes and seconds on a movable axis. While rotating the 180 degrees, the retrograde hour hand changes its color, depending on the time of the day. Despite of the hand’s location, the minute and second discs always remain aligned and accurate during the linear reading of time.

The additional function, provided by the new Cyrus watch, is that of date. It appears in the exhibition window, extended over a large segment. The date is indicated by means of the units digits from 0 to 9 and the retrograde three-dimensional tens.

The moment the tens digit reaches the figure 9, the latter moves in retrograde and rotates by 90 degrees. At the same time it offers the space for the next tens digit, placed before the units digit 0.

The last, but not the least, is a three-dimensional full moon function. Featuring realistic crater images, it pays homage to the Tower of Babel. A black patch, which gradually covers the full moon, symbolizes the lunar phases. When the moon is fully covered, the user can enjoy the three-section Cyrus logo.

The new Cyrus watch is teamed with a black hand-sewn crocodile leather strap with a tone on tone stitching. It terminates in a black titanium clasp with a Cyrus logo on the cap. The model is delivered in a presentation case, designed in the brand’s workshops. The case contains a moon phase regulator, a spare black crocodile strap and a warranty card.

The new Klepcys watch, reference 539.001.A, has almost the same characteristics as the variation described above. The exception is represented by the case material - 18K red gold. The folding clasp, which fastens a brown hand-sewn crocodile leather strap to the wearer’s wrist, is manufactured from the same material. The issue of the model is strictly limited to 33 pieces.
