Meet Cvstos Challenge CTR-S Watch

Jan 20, 2010
Faithful to its tradition of innovation, the horological company Cvstos has thrilled watch enthusiasts with its new Challenge Chrono Tourbillon rattrapante sport watch, which strikes the eye with its revolutionary design. The latter is a result of a fruitful collaboration between two esteemed watchmakers, Pierre-Michel and Jean-Pierre Golay.

The concept-S (sport) represents a clever blend of sophisticated technology and decidedly sporty design, which turns the brand’s innovation into a horological masterpiece. The creators of this marvelous product have accomplished a technical feat: they brought a complication to the forefront and made the basic function of indicating the time of secondary importance. Thus, the highly-qualified craftsmen manufactured a true chronograph rather than a chronograph timepiece.

The key feature, characterizing the brand, is its continuous desire to push the extreme limits of modern technologies way beyond what was thought possible. This progressive concept model has established the company’s credibility and technical virtuosity among the elite of watchmakers.

The rattrapante chronograph with a mysterious tourbillon is endowed with a reversed movement mechanism. It is the front of the watch that displays the chronograph function. The brand’s major specialists have placed in the spotlight the element which usually remains invisible. Their principal purpose was to unveil the mystery of the complication for the laymen. Secondly, they aimed at exerting an irresistible attraction in terms of technical aspect on connoisseurs.

This revolutionary watch is an absolute newcomer to the watch market. The undeniable highlight of this chronograph is the carriage's upper bridge, manufactured from Ergal aluminium. Enigmatic in its configuration, it features no liaison bridge between the main plate and the tourbillon carriage itself. It definitely enhances the visual appeal and produces an incredible effect of being suspended in a vacuum.

This model is also outfitted with a coupling in series with the chronograph by interaxial variation: linear and non-rotary function. It demands no braking of the chronograph wheel, which generally causes power loss.

The instantaneous minute counter is with no power loss. The rattrapante mechanism, with no clamps and no perturbation on the chronograph wheel, provides utmost reliability if compared to conventional couplings with a clamp system.

The zero positioning systems of the counters for the chronograph function, for the minute and the hour counters are synchronized.

The chronograph's kinematic mechanisms are located at the centre of the movement. Due to this favorable position, the energy, necessary for its operation, is punctually delivered.

The Cvstos Challenge CTR-S watch is available with a tonneau-shaped case, which features the dimensions of 59mm x 45mm. Sculptured in a successful combination of Black Ergal, titanium, Black Plasma Titanium, steel and 5N red gold, it demonstrates a polished and satin-finished surface.

On its front side the watch case is assembled with a sapphire crystal, coated with a double-sided non-reflective treatment. Its open backside is also armed with a sapphire crystal. The case is fitted with a screw-down crown, crafted from polished grade 5 titanium with Nitril insert. It is also equipped with push-pieces, sculptured in a clever blend of red anodised Ergal and polished grade 5 titanium.

This impressive watch case embraces an openworked dial. It is completed with Superluminova-applied indexes and pierced, chrome or Black Plasma-coated hands, also with Superluminova. The alluring dial reveals a chronograph 30-minute sub-dial, located at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour counter, positioned at 9 o’clock and a clock indicator, placed at 12 o’clock. These sub-dials are kept company by a power reserve indicator, nestled at 10.30. The watch power reserve constitutes 8 days.

This work of art relies on the brand’s proprietary Calibre 555 movement, developed by Pierre-Michel Golay. Paved with 48 jewels, it features a balance wheel, beating at the rate of 18,000 vibrations per hour.

The Challenge Chrono Tourbillon rattrapante sport watch is accompanied by a black rubber or alligator leather strap finished with a folding clasp. The timepiece can be mounted on a tailor-made Alcantara leather strap. This novelty from Cvstos boasts 100-meter water-resistance. It is to be issued as a limited series of 5 items every year.
