Bulgari Grande Sonnerie Perpetual Calendar Watch - Exceptionally Complicated

Oct 20, 2011
The new Bulgari Grande Sonnerie Perpetual Calendar watch is a true horological standout due to an incredible array of functions and a mind-blowing number of individual parts, used for its movement.

The craftsmen within the manufacture invested six months to produce and decorate the DR 5307 caliber movement, composed of 923 elements and 82 jewels. The assembly of the mechanism took the following four months. The fascinating details of the movement can be viewed via the sapphire crystal case-back.

The heart of the new Bulgari watch breathes life into hours and minutes, a day of the week and months, leap years, a date as well as double power-reserve indicators. It also drives the perpetual calendar, minute repeater, tourbillon and moon-phase complications as well as four hammers, Grande Sonnerie with Westminster chime and Petite Sonnerie complications.

The Grande Sonnerie mechanism chimes the quarters four times per hour. To ensure the necessary supply of energy, the timekeeper is endowed with two self-winding barrels. The first feeds the usual timekeeping functions, providing a 48-hour power-reserve.

The second, meanwhile, delivers energy to the striking mechanism only. It allows for a 24-hour power reserve in Grande Sonnerie mode and that of 28 hours in Petite Sonnerie mode. The latter implies that the mechanism does not repeat the hours when it strikes the quarters. The minute repeater complication is also capable of chiming hours, quarters and minutes on request.

All the functions are skillfully arranged on an 18-carat pink-gold dial with an alternating lacquered finish. It also features an opaline anthracite and snailed surface coating. Partially open-worked, the dial of the new Bulgari Grande Sonnerie Perpetual Calendar watch boasts elegant Roman numerals. Among other keynotes of the display are semi-transparent sapphire discs indicating the days and months.

The dial is embraced by an 18-carat pink gold case. The crown at 3 oclock is meant for adjusting the time. The pusher, responsible for the minute repeater mechanism, is located at 9 oclock. It is kept company by strike/silence and Grande and Petite Sonnerie selectors, placed at 10 and 7 oclock respectively. The water-resistance of the model is assured down to 30 meters.

The new Bulgari watch is accompanied by a black alligator leather strap. It is closed with an 18-carat pink gold triple-blade folding clasp.
