Breitling Navitimer Watches - Distinctive Style, Legendary Status, Superb Functionality

Feb 10, 2007
Breitling Navitimer watch holds the legendary status in the horology world. The first ever Navitimer watch was launched in 1952. It was designed specially for pilots and Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association (AOPA) made the Navitimer their official watch.

First models: It is not difficult to guess that the name Navitimer is composed of two words - navigation and timer. The first Breitling Navitimer watches were created with a black dial featuring Arabic numerals and with the AOPA logo. These timekeepers incorporated three essential instruments for navigation: a watch, a chronograph and a slide rule.

Innovative version: Following ten years of success of the first Navitimer model, Breitling decided to develop an innovative version of the top seller. The most eye-catching change is the introduction of white sub-dials. The designers didn't use Arabic numerals for the new model - only the '12' remained on the dial. You will notice the Breitling signature as well as the AOPA logo on all the timepieces of the line.

In the late 60's the company released Navitimers that featured no the AOPA logo. They revealed a new distinctive Breitling logo composed of two planes. As for the white sub-dials, they became bigger, having significantly changed the appearance of the watch.

Quartz revolution: In the early 1970-s the watch-making industry was shaken by a real revolution - the appearance of the quartz technology. Breitling wanted to follow the latest tendency and in 1973 the company launched Quartz Navitimer watches. The timepieces were provided with LED (light electro luminescent diodes) technology. The Breitling Navitimers had a black display. On the side of the watch there was a special push-button used to light the LEDs.

Rebirth of the model: Ernest Schneider bought the Breilting and Navitimer trademark. For the period of about ten years there have been attempts to release some Navitimers. However, the true rebirth of the Navitimer line took place in 1986 with the launch of the 81600 model. The timepiece incorporated a mechanical movement. This model was soon followed by the appearance of 81610 automatic, that was special for peculiar sub-dials' layout - they were positioned at 12, 6 and 9 o'clock.

The 1990-s marked a new wave of success for mechanical timepieces. In 1993 Breitling inspired by success introduced the "Old Navitimer II".

Navitimer heritage: More than 50 years have passed since the launch of the first Navitimer. Today Breitling is one of the leading watch producers in the world, with Navitimer being a true legend of watchmaking. The major characteristics of the model remain the same. The Breitling Navitimer watch line comprises a wide range of models, including luxury models in gold.
