In April, 1891, two trains collided head-on at the depot in Kipton, Ohio
. The accident, in which several people died, became known as the Kipton Fast Mail train tragedy
. It was obviously caused by the engineer’s slow watch.
For the tragedy like this not to happen ever again, Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad made a decision to develop a special inspection system. It led to the creation of the Ball Time Service and introduction of standardized practices for pocket watch production. Soon Ball’name became synonymous with a high level of accuracy.
