As magnets are now more present in our everyday lives than ever before, magnetism represents a serious issue for watchmakers who have to demagnetize mechanical timepieces that have been exposed to magnetic fields and lost the accuracy of their performance. The new Omega movement successfully solves this problem.
The Omega team developed the technology that allowed them to develop the first prototype of the movement. The watchmakers have used it for an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra watch.
While other timepieces use a protective container inside the watch-case for protecting the movement from the effects of magnetism, the new Omega movement itself incorporates selected non-ferrous materials. Omega expects to receive several patents for the new movement.
Omega will present the innovative technology at Baselworld in April and introduce the new movement, the Omega Co-Axial calibre 8508, to the market in 2013.
