swiss-made watch?

Can you explain what watch is rightfully considered to be Swiss-made?

May 14, 2010 03:10 PM Watches.Infoniac Team answers:
Watches manufactured in Switzerland bear the "Swiss made" label, or "Swiss" in short, along with the logo of their producer.

According to the law on the use of the "Swiss made" label for watches, there are the minimum conditions to be fulfilled by watch producers before they add the "Swiss made" label to their timekeeping products.

This law is based on the concept that Swiss quality depends on the amount of work performed on a timepiece in Switzerland. Some foreign components may be used by watch producers. The law states that the assembly work on the watch movement and on the watch itself must be undertaken in Switzerland. The movement must also pass the final tests in Switzerland. Not less than 50% of the movement components must be manufactured in Switzerland.

It is important to mention that some regions in Switzerland add their own "place of origin" labels. This is the case with the "Genève" label added to high-quality watches produced in the city and canton of Geneva.
