Vulcain 50s Presidents' Watch - Legendary Cricket Alarm Movement

Nov 12, 2010
The timepiece manufacture Vulcain is delighted to announce its new 50s Presidents' watch, which eloquently narrates the story of the Cricket alarm movement.

A period of renewal and hope, the 1950s gave birth to many ideas, successfully turned into reality afterwards. While the American president Harry Truman was presenting his “doctrine”, aimed at protecting free peoples from the advance of communism, the Vulcain’s esteemed masters were trying to figure out how to make a striking mechanism, functionally loud and at the same time miniature enough to be incorporated within a wristwatch. A proper solution was a Cricket alarm caliber, introduced by the brand in 1947.

The innovative movement was integrated within a number of Vulcain extraordinary watches, which became instant favorites among the world’s most powerful men. They also appealed to successive American presidents and therefore acquired a name of “The Presidents’ Watches”.

The new Vulcain watch conveys a true spirit of the 1950s, brought into a contemporary context.

Supremely elegant, the model is available with an 18K pink gold or steel 316L case. It features the dimensions of 42 mm x 49 mm x 15 mm: diameter, length and height indicated respectively. On its front side, the case is assembled with a domed sapphire crystal. The same glass is used for its back side, embellished with a stylized “V” for Vulcain. The case handles depths of up to 50 meters.

The 18K pink gold version comes equipped with a charcoal grey or silver dial. The steel 316L interpretation also shows off a smoked grey display. All the variations are completed with stick-shaped hour-markers and oversized Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12 o’clock. Moving around the dials are centralized hands, which serve to display hours, minutes and seconds.

These functions are complimented by that of date, arranged in the aperture at 6 o’clock. The display of the new 50s Presidents' watch also demonstrates an additional central hand, finalized by an arrow. It is responsible for the alarm function, which sounds for 20 seconds.

The timekeeper presented accommodates a manufactory-made self-winding 12-lignes alarm movement - calibre V-21. It is endowed with two barrels: one serves to supply the energy, necessary for the functions of hours, minutes and seconds, and the other delivers the power to the alarm function.

Composed of 257 individual parts, the mechanism is also equipped with the Exactomatic system, which ensures regular amplitude and enhanced rating accuracy.

Artfully set with 23 gorgeous rubies, the caliber beats to the rhythm of 18,000 vibrations per hour and boasts a 42-hour power reserve.

A dependable companion in both formal settings and sports, the new Vulcain watch is delivered on a black or brown alligator leather strap, fitted with a pin buckle in 18K pink gold or steel 316L.
